Rep. Angela Rigas today responded to Attorney General Dana Nessel’s comments made after Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s State of the State address last week. The attorney general critiqued the governor’s calls for bipartisanship and said it would be a mistake to normalize relations with the Trump Administration. Nessel went on to refer to President Trump as a “wannabe petty dictator who fashions himself to be a king” and “a threat to Michigan.”
“The attorney general’s comments felt very out of place, especially considering the past several years,” Rigas said. “She weaponized the government against business owners during COVID. She indicted many of her political opponents leading up to the election. Republicans aren’t a ‘threat to democracy’ or a ‘threat to Michigan.’ But someone clearly is.”
Rigas is chair of the Subcommittee on Weaponization of State Government, a subcommittee of the Michigan House Oversight Committee. Last week, the committee announced the launch of a new tip line where residents can report abuses committed by the government.
“I’m very concerned with the attorney general’s rhetoric,” Rigas said. “We need to be able to reach across the aisle on key issues that matter to all our constituents. It’s concerning that she seems only interested in utilizing her position to wage war with the White House, rather than working together where we can. The public should be watching her very closely going forward.”
While Rigas said she is skeptical of the governor’s calls for bipartisanship, she hopes there is genuine cooperation on important matters facing the public.
“We want to get things done for our residents,” Rigas said. “This far-left, activist mentality dividing the Democrats on whether they’re willing to work with us really shows how unstable their party has become in the last several years. Between the Democrat Senate suing the Republican House and the attorney general attacking the governor, we need to put this partisan pettiness aside and get real results for the people.”
