Rep. Hall: Border policy resolution protects tax dollars, everyday Americans

The House Tax Policy Committee today approved a resolution sponsored by state Rep. Matt Hall urging President Joe Biden to respect and enforce the nation’s immigration laws while prioritizing law-abiding and hard-working taxpayers.

From the onset of the Biden administration, there has been a sharp increase in the number of migrants at the border between the United States and Mexico compared to previous years under Donald Trump’s presidency. On his first day in office, President Biden halted work on a border wall between the two countries, ended the national emergency that was previously in place at the border and suspended a policy that required asylum seekers to remain in Mexico for their immigration hearings. It was later ruled by a federal court that this suspension was improperly carried out and has since been reinstated.

“Since his first day in office, Joe Biden’s actions have made it clear that the borders of our country are open and our immigration laws no longer need to be followed,” said Hall, of Comstock Township. “His radical open border policies have led to a massive and staggering crisis on our southern border. Our hard-working federal law enforcement tasked with securing our borders don’t have the support they need as this problem grows. Further, we have seen proposals in Congress that include provisions to extend the Child Tax Credit to illegal immigrants, as well as other irresponsible ideas that reward people who break our laws and will only exacerbate this issue.

“Everyday Americans continue to feel the strain of inflation on their budgets. Our focus should be on helping them first – and this measure calls on Joe Biden to follow through on that.”

According to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, more than 2 million unauthorized immigrants came across America’s southern border in 2021. The amount of certain narcotics seized at the border also increased, with heroin seizures being up 113 percent. In April of this year, U.S. authorities saw a record-high number of migrant encounters – the highest total for one month in 22 years.

House Resolution 290 urges Biden to prioritize United States citizens as they struggle with the impacts of inflation and record cost increases – instead of using tax dollars to alleviate an illegal immigration problem he continues to encourage through reckless policy initiatives.

If approved by the House, copies of the resolution will be transmitted to the White House.
