Rep. Fox Addresses Flooding in Northern Michigan
RELEASE|April 20, 2026
Contact: Joseph Fox

State Rep. Joseph Fox today urged residents to be vigilant and follow evacuation orders following flooding throughout parts of Northern Michigan. In response, the governor last week declared a state of emergency for 32 counties, including Lake, Newaygo, Oceana, and Wexford.

Rising floodwaters along the Muskegon River prompted local authorities to order residents to evacuate the floodplain downstream of the Croton and Hardy Dams.

“We have to prioritize safety,” said Fox (R-Cadillac). “Residents are encouraged to listen to emergency managers and to be prepared to evacuate before it’s too late. We are extremely grateful to the responders working tirelessly to mitigate the damage, but the threat of rising water levels persists. As we work to stop the flooding, resources are available to assist those in need.”

District Health Department #10 has warned locals that floodwaters can disrupt septic systems and contaminate private wells. If flooding is believed to have impacted these systems, please contact the health department or certified professionals when the flooding has receded for safety testing and evaluations.

The Treasury is offering support to taxpayers impacted by the flooding by providing the option to request special tax extension relief. This relief will give taxpayers extra time to file and pay certain state taxes, with penalties and interest waived. This exemption applies to residents of Lake, Newaygo, Oceana, and Wexford.
