State Rep. Timmy Beson last week secured support for local Bay County efforts in budget plans that advanced to the governor.

Beson, R-Bangor Township, and the Michigan Legislature on Friday approved the annual budget, after a Thursday vote to fund various land acquisition and development projects through the state’s Natural Resources Trust Fund.

Beson secured $400,000 to help the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Great Lakes Bay Region maintain and improve its Bay City facilities as it serves young people in the community. The organization is planning a variety of building and grounds projects, such as improvements to athletic facilities, technology, and the kitchen, and the grant would contribute to the efforts. The funding was included in House Bill 5783, which sets the annual budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

“This new funding will serve the people of Bay County,” Beson said. “Kids in our community get to learn and make friends at Boys and Girls Clubs. With improved facilities, this awesome organization can offer young people even better after-school opportunities.”

Senate Bill 1028, which allocates resources from the Natural Resources Trust Fund, will provide Monitor Township $269,400 to help expand access to the Kawkawlin River and enrich the visitor experience at Herbert W. Steih Memorial Park. The project will renovate the parking lot and a canoe-kayak launch at the park, while adding new features, such as another canoe-kayak launch, paths, a pavilion, park benches, and informative signs by the river. The state funding will supplement existing resources.

“Bay County families love to go down to the Kawkawlin River,” Beson said. “People taking a walk by the river, paddling a canoe, or going fishing will enjoy new park facilities in Monitor Township.”

Both bills are before the governor for her expected signature.
