A resolution from state Rep. Greg Alexander underscoring safety within a hobby hundreds of thousands of Michiganders enjoy was approved today by the Michigan House.
Alexander’s House Resolution 101 designates May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The measure honors the motorcycle community’s commitment to safety and reminds every driver on Michigan’s roadways that awareness saves lives. It encourages motorcycle operators to don proper protective riding attire, abide by the rules of the road and perform regular safety and maintenance checks, while also serving as a reminder to car and truck drivers to be watchful now that motorcyclists are once again frequenting public roadways and sharing them with vehicles.
“Michiganders love their motorcycles, and spring is synonymous with the return of people out enjoying all that our state has to offer,” said Alexander, of Carsonville. “Highway safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, we all benefit when every driver stays alert and cautious. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents and fatalities are tragedies that impact residents, their families and close friends every year.
“Riding a motorcycle is not the same as driving a car or truck. It requires specialized skills, focused training, and the ability to make split-second decisions in ever-changing traffic conditions. Riders need to know the rules of the road, understand the importance of defensive driving, and most importantly, they need to protect themselves with proper riding gear — helmets, gloves, jackets, and more. This resolution emphasizes safety for both motorcyclists and other drivers so people can return home safely after their rides are finished.”
Michigan has over 230,000 registered motorcycles and over 610,000 people who have operator licenses with a motorcycle endorsement.
Alexander is in his second term serving the 98th House District, which includes residents in portions of Lapeer, Sanilac and Tuscola counties, as well as all of Huron County.
